Building a Steel Structure in Virginia: Permits, Zoning & What You Need to Know

Virginia enforces the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) across all jurisdictions. Farm buildings have a specific exemption from the building code. Rural Virginia, particularly the Shenandoah Valley and southwest VA, is more favorable for steel buildings and barndominiums.

The Board of Housing and Community Development adopts the USBC. Local governments enforce it through their building departments. Local jurisdictions cannot adopt less restrictive codes.
